Iconic Coachman Park Public Art Installation

Body

SUMMARY:

The City of Clearwater is seeking an artist to create an iconic, large-scale public art installation for Coachman Park, with an anticipated project budget of $200,000-$250,000. This signature artwork is envisioned as a major placemaking element within the park-an interactive, memorable piece that enhances the visitor experience, encourages engagement, and becomes a recognizable landmark where residents and visitors want to gather, connect, and capture photos. The City received more than 90 applications from talented artists across the country across two separate platforms. Unlike our traditional public art selection process, this opportunity specifically requested artists to submit concept ideas, sketches, or renderings in addition to examples of previous work and experience. This approach allows the City and selection panel to better understand each artist’s vision and artistic approach from the beginning, rather than selecting finalists solely on past work and then hoping the resulting proposals align with the community’s vision. Staff will seek assistance from the Public Art and Design Advisory Board in the jury and selection process. The goal is to identify the right artist and concept for a transformative artwork that complements Coachman Park and has the potential to become an iconic symbol of Clearwater for years to come. The final location within Coachman Park has not yet been determined and will be considered as part of the overall selection and design process, ensuring the artwork is thoughtfully integrated into the park environment and maximizes public interaction.
